On Wednesday, senators voted 22-17 to create a new government mandate that women seeking abortions must pay for ultrasounds and, in most cases, view live images of the fetus. They also adopted an amendment banning abortion coverage for individuals and businesses who buy insurance under an exchange that would be created by President Barack Obama's health care overhaul passed by Congress earlier this year. Both were added to an otherwise innocuous health care bill, which is up for a final vote in the Senate today.

That blocked consideration of all bills coming from the Senate, and House Democrats promise to continue the tactic until Republican leaders agree to shelve an abortion bill that emerged, without committee hearings or public testimony, on the Senate floor Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the Democrats didn't block long enough and the bill passed today. What's wrong with these sick Republicans that can write and pass bills like this?

The bill past 76-44 among party lines, but Democrats hope that the newly independent Charlie Crist vetoes the bill.

One of Crist's finer points...and one that the Republicans dislike about him is that he has been a supporter of women's rights....we can only hope that he vetoes it.

These people truly scare me!

There seems to be a trend lately of states passing tougher restrictions on abortion.,

redshadow...you're right. The attack on womens' rights to health care are becoming more and more aggressive and bold. The women of this country need to stand up and protest against this attack...or we will back to the back-alley butcher days very soon.

I think the attack is a very well thought out plan..to chip away at what rights we have now...

if this doesn't pass, well at least it got on the books...the next plan may be more invasive...more intrusive, until they have finally chipped and chisled all of our rights away.

It truly is sad and I will never understand how anyone in America can have the attitude that a woman is not to have complete control over her own body!

Women should have complete control over their bodies. Just do not criticize Tebow's mother for not having an abortion also.

No one criticized Tebow's mother for not having an abortion. That was her choice, and for her it was a great one!

Let's add insult to injury. If YOU feel you must have an abortion, then we feel you MUST pay for the ultrasound that WE want you to have!!!

Where in the world do these people come from???

Those people are way off their rockers. What ever happened to privacy of the patient? Just because it's a woman that's seeking an abortion shouldn't make a difference.

I must be completely not understanding just what it is these people want....they say ...or let's say I "hear" that they want LESS government involvement....but then they want the government to force women to undergo unnecessary procedures and then to PAY for it...when they are having a medical procedure done?

    What's next???

They say they want less government involvement unless it comes to legislating morality.

Know what I wanna see? Legislation mandating that every flacid penis has to have 500 signatures before the owner can be prescribed the Viagra that would impregnate the woman they're forcing to pay for and witness the ultrasound before her abortion. That's what I would like to see.

On a semi-related note, S.C. Attorney General struck down similar legislation citing Unconstitutionality. If I remember correctly - and I may not - something about Patients' Rights and not telling the doctor how to conduct his business with his patient.

I find it amazing that anyone can come in here and be ugly and rude, and leave snarky comments...when it could just as easily pertain to any of our mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, daughters, grand-daughters, neighbors, friends...any female in our immediate or extende family..or just someone we care about....
